私は新インターン生、メイです。今、クライストチャーチのARA工科大学で日本語を勉強しています。
今回はニュージーランドの日本語教育について私の経験をシェアしたいと思います。
ニュージーランドで言語を勉強することができる高校はけっこうあります。
最近フランス語と中国語が人気さが増えているそうです。
残念ながら、日本語勉強に興味を持っている人が減っているそうです。さらに、日本語を勉強できる高校が少ないです。
私は入学から卒業まで｢5年間」高校で日本語を勉強した経験があります。
でも時が経つにつれて同級生がだんだん日本語の勉強を辞めてしまいました。
多分なぜかというと、日本語の難しさではなく、先生の教え方のせいで諦めました。
あの先生はニュージーランド女の人でした。
発音があまり上手ではなかったし、何年も日本に行きませんでした。
日本人先生がいったらもっと生徒が日本語の勉強を続けたかも知りません。
クラスはニュージーランド人学生と日本から来た留学生ミックスでした。
普通の授業はプリントから習ったり日本のことについて面白い動画を見たりするものでした。時々ジブリの映画を見ました。
そして、期末に同級生と一緒に寿司を作りました。
今は、ARA工科大学で日本語の勉強を続けています。
そして私は今まで8年間日本語を勉強してきました。
大学の先生は日本人で、日本語や文化や習慣などを正しく学べます。
もちろん、高校レベルと違いますが今の先生の方が良いです。
ARA工科大学では日本語と英語を学んでいる生徒達の建物は同じなので、昼ご飯休憩の間に英語を勉強している日本人は日本語を勉強しているニュージーランド人と話したり友達になることができます。ARAで留学プログラムもあります。3年生になると一学期ぐらい日本に行けるチャンスがあります。私は京都産業大学に行かさせていただきました。本当に最高の経験でした。言語を学ぶために留学は一番いいと思います。
英語バージョンはこれからです
Most high schools offer language study options, but not all offer Japanese. Chinese and French are popular but unfortunately, popularity of Japanese language is dropping.
I studied Japanese in high school from year 9-13, over those years I noticed a lot of my classmates gradually dropping out of the class. However, I think students were more put off by the teacher rather than the difficulty of the language. Our teacher was a kiwi lady who was quite out of touch with Japan/Japanese and she had bad pronunciation. If we’d had a native Japanese teacher, perhaps more students would have stayed.
Our class was a mixture of kiwi students and Japanese international students. During lessons we would usually work from handouts but we often watched entertaining videos from or about Japan, we also some times watched ジブリ movies. At the end of every term we made sushi together.
I have continued my Japanese studies through to university and have been studying for 8 years now. My teachers at university are Japanese so I can learn the language,culture and customs properly. ofcourse the level of language is different to that of high school level but I have to say, my teachers now are much better. At ARA the classrooms where I study Japanese and the Japanese exchange students study English are in the same building, so during lunch break we have the chance to talk and make friends.
The ARA Japanese program offers the opportunity to study abroad in the third year. I was fortunate enough to be able to go to Kyoto Sangyo University for one semester. It was a really good experience. I think going abroad is the best way to learn a language.
